Maytag top-load HE washers show a short code. Or Letter combination on the display when something needs attention. Maytag’s own support documentation lists what each code means and what to try first. This guide covers the most common ones. And When Maytag’s own guidance says to call for service instead.

What the most common Maytag washer codes mean
- F# E# or F## — A general system error. Press START/PAUSE once to clear it, then press it again to restart. If it returns, Maytag recommends contacting service.
- LF, Lo FL, or F8 E1 — The washer is taking too long to fill. Make sure both the hot and cold faucets are fully open, since the washer needs both supplies.
- Ofb — The load is out of balance. The washer will try to self-correct; if it stops, redistribute the load evenly and press START/PAUSE.
- OL — The load is too large. The washer drains the water and detergent; remove some items, add HE detergent, and restart.
- Sud — Excessive suds were detected. Maytag’s guidance is to use only HE (high-efficiency) detergent going forward.
- LdL / LdU — The lid will not lock or will not unlock. Check for items under the lid or on top of it, and clear any detergent buildup around the lock mechanism.
What Maytag recommends you try first (Maytag washer error codes)

For most F-codes, Maytag’s own guidance is simple: press START/PAUSE once to clear the display, then press it again to restart the cycle. For a PF code (power failure interrupted the cycle), touch and hold START to resume, or press POWER to clear the display. If a code returns right after you clear it, that usually means the underlying part needs a technician rather than another reset.
A code that is not actually a malfunction
Not every code means something is broken. An HC code appears at the end of a cycle when the hot and cold inlet hoses are connected backwards — turn off the water supply, swap the hoses, and run another cycle to confirm. A lid message just means the lid was left open; closing it clears the display, though if it stays open more than 10 minutes the cycle resets and drains, and you can restart without adding more detergent.
Your exact code may not be listed here
Maytag’s own support page notes this list may not include every code for every model, and recommends checking your owner’s manual for codes specific to your washer. If your code is not listed above, Maytag’s support site can help you look it up by model number, or a technician can read it directly from the control board.
When it is time for a technician
- An F-code returns immediately after you clear and restart it
- The washer will not fill even with both faucets fully open
- The lid will not lock or unlock even with nothing on or under it
- You smell burning, see smoke, or notice water leaking from underneath

Frequently asked questions
Why does my Maytag washer keep showing Sud even though I am using less detergent?
Only HE (high-efficiency) detergent is formulated for low-water washers. Regular detergent produces far more suds than the machine can rinse out, which triggers the code repeatedly.
Is an Ofb code something I need to fix myself?
Usually not — the washer runs a balance correction on its own. It only needs your help if it stops and asks you to redistribute the load.
Can a power outage damage my Maytag washer?
No. A PF code just means the cycle was interrupted by a power failure. Touching and holding START resumes the cycle from where it left off.
